Window types for Hassocks houses, by age

Six window types for homes in Hassocks, Keymer and the villages nearby

Sash windows

The railway villas on Keymer Road, Woodfield Road and around Stonepound were built with sliding sashes. A uPVC vertical slider keeps the look, finished white, cream, grey or in a wood effect; timber box sashes are for listed houses and anywhere the planners ask for timber.

Casement windows

The 1920s houses on London Road and the post-war houses round Friars Oak Road have small, upright openings. Chamfered casements suit them best, and flush casements look more like old timber if you want that.

Steel-look windows

Many 1930s houses here started with metal windows. Slim black aluminium frames with horizontal bars bring back that line without the cold and rust of the originals.

Bay windows

Canted bays on the interwar semis and two-storey sash bays on the Victorian terraces. A bay is replaced as one job, frame and roof joint together.

Aluminium windows

Slimline aluminium casements suit the 1960s and 1970s houses built between the older villas. They cost less than timber and give more glass than uPVC.

Cottage windows

Flint and brick cottages in Keymer, Clayton and Ditchling have small casements in thick walls. Some are listed and need timber; others can take a slim flush casement.

Not sure which type you have?

Most people are not. Describe the house on a short call; the original windows can usually be worked out from its age and street.
